The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has arrested six commercial transport operators for allegedly charging passengers fares above the approved rates on routes from the Central Business District (CBD) to Awoshie, Kasoa and Madina.
The six suspects, comprising three drivers and three bus conductors, popularly known as “mates”, were arrested on Tuesday evening, August 25, 2026, during an enforcement exercise conducted by the Assembly.
The operation, which took place between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., followed a warning by the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, against arbitrary increases in fares by commercial transport operators in the metropolis.
The AMA said the arrests were made in accordance with Clause 19(f) and (d) of the AMA (Operation of Commercial Vehicles) By-laws, 2017.
The provision prohibits commercial vehicle operators from charging passengers fares higher than those officially prescribed and approved by the Assembly in consultation with representatives of major transport operator unions.
It also prohibits drivers from compelling passengers to alight at points along a journey and re-board the same vehicle in order to charge separate fares for different sections of the trip.
The drivers arrested were identified as Joseph Bonney, Francis Morgah and Foster Osei.
The three conductors arrested were Benjamin Ofori Atta, Emmanuel Aduafo and Emmanuel Paa Ekow Amissah.
The AMA has warned commercial transport operators in the metropolis against violating approved fare regulations and urged them to comply with the established fares.
The enforcement exercise forms part of efforts by the Assembly to protect passengers from arbitrary fare charges and ensure compliance with regulations governing commercial transport operations in Accra.
