Airbus Bribery Scandal: Special Prosecutor Clears Former President Mahama and Others
In a significant development, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has closed its investigation into the alleged bribery of high-ranking Ghanaian officials by Airbus SE intermediaries. The probe, which began in 2020, focused on the purchase of military transport aircraft between 2009 and 2015.
Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng announced that no evidence was found to suggest that former President John Mahama or other individuals were paid bribes for the aircraft purchase. This means that no criminal proceedings will be instituted against anyone involved.
The investigation did find that Airbus intermediaries made payments to certain individuals, but there was no proof that these payments were intended to bribe public officials. The OSP has rescinded arrest warrants for those individuals and notified INTERPOL to withdraw the “Red Notice” against them.
Former President Mahama, who was interviewed by the OSP in January 2024, denied receiving any bribes or personal benefits from the aircraft procurement. The OSP found that his direct communications with Airbus officials were driven by good intentions.
This conclusion brings closure to a long-running investigation. Stay tuned for more updates on this story!”
