Pragya Association Engages Tricycle Operators in Akumadan on New Regulations Amid Security and Market Updates Akumadan, October

Leadership from the Pragya Association in the Ashanti Region visited Akumadan in the Offinso North District yesterday to hold discussions with local riders and owners on the government’s new regulations aimed at streamlining tricycle operations under the National Union of Tricycles Operators of Ghana (NUTOG).

The engagement, hosted under the theme “Offinso North MPuntuo,” focused on two key agenda items: the alleged closure of Nkenkaaso Market and emerging concerns, as well as critical updates on security matters in the district.

Participants, including the Ashanti Regional Chairman of NUTOG, gathered for a one-on-one session with the Offinso North District Police Commander, A.S.P. Paul Donkoh, scheduled at 8:00 a.m. During the meeting, A.S.P. Donkoh highlighted notable progress in curbing armed robbery incidents, a persistent challenge upon his assumption of duty.

“My coming to the Offinso North District was greeted with rampant cases of armed robbery, but thankfully, we have worked to significantly reduce the rate of robbery incidents in the last three months,” A.S.P. Donkoh stated, crediting enhanced patrols, community cooperation, and targeted operations along the Kumasi-Techiman highway, a notorious hotspot for such crimes.

The Nkenkaaso Market issue drew particular attention, with stakeholders addressing rumors of an impending closure and related disruptions. While no official confirmation of a shutdown was provided, discussions emphasized ongoing efforts to resolve infrastructural and operational challenges at the market, including hygiene standards and trader welfare, drawing parallels to recent interventions in nearby Afrancho Market.

The Pragya Association’s visit underscores the government’s push for regulated transport sectors, with operators urged to comply with licensing, safety protocols, and route designations to enhance service delivery and road safety. Regional NUTOG Chairman reaffirmed the union’s commitment to collaborating with authorities for sustainable operations.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts in Offinso North, a key agricultural hub known for tomato production, where community engagements are vital for addressing economic and security priorities amid the district’s growth.
