Young Man’s Body Found in Abandoned Galamsey Pit After Dispute with Sex Workers in Ashanti Region

The body of a 28-year-old man, Yaw Asamoah, was discovered in an abandoned illegal mining pit in Abrense, near Atobease in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, sparking fears of foul play linked to a heated argument over stolen cash.

Local police from the Manso Nkwanta District Command arrested two suspects on November 7 in connection with the death, which happened during a funeral wake-keeping event in the Atobrakrom Electoral Area.

Eyewitnesses say Asamoah was last seen alive on November 3 at the gathering, where he got into a fierce clash with a group of commercial sex workers.

The trouble started after Asamoah accused one of the women of taking GH¢1,000 from him right after they met at a popular spot called K.K. Spot.

He had reportedly just paid for her services when he noticed the money missing, leading to shouts and denials that drew a crowd. Witnesses described the scene as tense, but say Asamoah stormed off alone later that night.

His family grew worried when he didn’t come home, and a search the next day led them to the overgrown galamsey pit nearby – a common hazard from unchecked illegal mining in the area.

The body was pulled out, showing no obvious signs of violence, but relatives suspect he was attacked and dumped there, calling it no accident.efdec1

A police spokesperson vowed a thorough probe: “Anyone found culpable will face the full rigors of the law.”

The suspects, whose identities and roles aren’t public yet, are helping with questioning as forensics wrap up.

This tragedy has rocked Abrense, a community already battling galamsey’s dangers – from poisoned rivers to deadly pits that claim lives yearly.

Locals are demanding more patrols and community watches to curb crime and seal off these death traps.

Asamoah, described by friends as a hardworking trader, leaves behind a grieving family pleading for justice.

The case shines a harsh light on rising insecurity in Amansie West, where illegal mining fuels not just environmental ruin but also violence and vice. Police urge tips from anyone who saw Asamoah that night – call Manso Nkwanta station at the earliest.
