Young Man Drowns Crossing River on Ghana-Togo Border

A 20-year-old man has drowned while attempting to cross a river that forms part of the Ghana-Togo border in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region.

The deceased, identified as Yaw Kombat, was a resident of Tambalug in the district and a former student of Tempane Senior High School.

According to reports, Kombat and some of his peers often assist travellers and road users to cross the river to and from Togo, particularly when heavy rains cause the water level to rise.

However, tragedy struck on Sunday when Kombat reportedly attempted to cross the swollen river and drowned.

Efforts to rescue him were unsuccessful, leaving residents and his peers devastated by the incident.

The incident has renewed concerns about the dangers faced by residents and travellers who use the crossing during periods of heavy rainfall, when the river becomes difficult and dangerous to cross.

Authorities and community members are expected to intensify calls for safer means of crossing the river, particularly during the rainy season.
