Unpaid Teachers Threaten Indefinite Protest Over Salary Arrears

The National Organiser of the Coalition of Unpaid Teachers, Eugene Zoranu Segbefia, has announced plans for an indefinite protest at the Ministry of Finance beginning Wednesday, April 15, if the government fails to present a clear plan to settle outstanding salary arrears.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, Mr. Segbefia revealed that some affected teachers have worked between seven and 18 months without pay.

“We have teachers who have worked between seven and 18 months without salaries. As we speak, we don’t even know whether the government will fulfil its obligation to us,” he said.

He noted that despite several engagements with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education, no concrete timeline has been provided for payment.

According to him, while assurances were given that processes were underway between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, teachers are yet to see any tangible results.

Mr. Segbefia questioned the government’s priorities, criticising the ongoing recruitment of new teachers while existing ones remain unpaid.

“We are already in the classrooms working, yet we are not being paid. Why recruit more teachers when you cannot even pay those already in the system?” he asked.

He also expressed concerns over what he described as unequal treatment compared to other public sector workers, citing nurses who have begun receiving their arrears.

The coalition had earlier given the government a deadline of April 12, 2026, to provide a payment plan, but says no response has been received.

As a result, members plan to escalate their actions starting April 15, with preparations underway for a prolonged demonstration.

“We are hitting the streets, and we are not leaving anytime soon,” he declared.

The group is demanding direct engagement with John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President, or the Chief of Staff, warning that the protest will continue until a clear payment plan is established.

Mr. Segbefia added that members are prepared for an extended stay at the protest site.

“We are coming with our belongings… we are prepared to sleep at the Ministry of Finance until we get a payment plan,” he said.

The planned protest is expected to draw participants from across the country, including teachers travelling from Kumasi and Tamale.
