Residents of Assin Fosu Municipality are grappling with deep sorrow and disbelief after two separate incidents of suicide claimed the lives of a private school teacher and a 43 year old farmer within days of each other.
The first case involves Emmanuel Kofi Quanoo, a teacher at Assin Dompim Academy Basic School who also worked as a taxi driver. Mr Quanoo allegedly took his own life by hanging in his room at Assin Fosu using a skipping rope tied to a crossbar. Sources close to the school said he had been absent from work for some time but resumed duties recently. On the day of the incident, he reportedly left campus around 12 noon after the second break, telling colleagues he was going home to seek medical attention.
Tragically, his two young daughters, aged eight and seven, raised the alarm when they returned from school and found their father unresponsive. The motive behind the teacher’s death remains unknown. He is survived by his wife and the two children.
In a separate but equally heartbreaking incident, a 43 year old farmer identified as Ato Kwamena allegedly shot himself at Assin Betinsinso in the same municipality. Relatives said the deceased called one of his brothers shortly after the act, informing him that he had shot himself and urgently needed help. Despite being rushed to a nearby health facility, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Both cases have been reported to the police, and investigations are underway to determine the circumstances, including any possible contributing factors such as mental health challenges, financial pressures, or personal disputes.
Community leaders and local authorities have expressed profound concern over the rising incidents of suicide in the area. They are calling for increased awareness on mental health support, counselling services, and community vigilance to identify and assist individuals who may be struggling silently.
The Ghana Police Service has appealed to the public to refrain from speculation and to allow investigations to proceed thoroughly. Families of both deceased persons are receiving support from relatives, church members, and local authorities during this painful period.
These heartbreaking losses serve as a sobering reminder of the silent struggles many people face and the urgent need for stronger mental health resources, open conversations about emotional well being, and accessible help in communities across the country.
