Transport Operators Threaten 20% Fare Increase Over Deteriorating Kasoa–Winneba Road

Commercial transport operators have issued a warning of a possible 20% increase in fares on the Kasoa–Winneba route from Monday, June 29, if urgent repairs are not carried out on the damaged road.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (Ghana Private Road Transport Union) (GPRTU) and the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana expressed concern over the worsening condition of the road, describing it as a major burden on drivers and passengers.
In a statement dated Wednesday, June 24, the groups said they had earlier issued a two-week ultimatum to government during a demonstration on June 12, demanding immediate intervention. However, they noted that no significant work has begun on the stretch since then.
According to the operators, the poor state of the Kasoa–Winneba Road continues to cause frequent vehicle breakdowns, increased fuel consumption, and long travel delays.
“The road continues to cause vehicle damage, high fuel consumption, and long delays for drivers and passengers,” the statement said.
They warned that if no visible action is taken, transport fares along the route will be increased by 20% to offset rising maintenance and operational costs.
“The adjustment is to cover the extra cost of fuel and maintenance from using alternative routes and the damage to vehicles,” they explained.
The unions have appealed to the Ministry of Roads and Highways and government authorities to urgently address the situation to prevent the planned fare hike.
They also called on commuters to bear with them, stressing that the proposed adjustment is necessary to sustain transport operations and protect drivers’ livelihoods.
