Tourism Minister Engages China for National Theatre Renovation

Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, has initiated discussions with the Chinese Ambassador to secure collaboration for renovating Ghana’s National Theatre, which was originally built with Chinese support.
In an exclusive interview with TV3’s Naa Ashorkor on Thursday, September 11, Gomashie revealed that detailed paperwork outlining the renovation requirements has been submitted to the ambassador.
“The theatre’s current state reflects poorly on the Ghana-China relationship. I’ve presented the case to the ambassador, and we’ve submitted the necessary documents to restore it to its past glory,” Gomashie said.
She acknowledged the deteriorated condition of the infrastructure and expressed optimism about the ongoing talks, noting, “They haven’t said no, but we’re awaiting a firm response from China.”
The minister highlighted the capital-intensive nature of the project, emphasizing that the collaboration is critical to achieving the desired standard. “I started this communication on a clean slate with the ambassador, and I’m hopeful for a positive outcome,” she added.
The National Theatre, a symbol of Ghana’s cultural heritage, has faced maintenance challenges, prompting calls for urgent upgrades to support the arts and tourism sectors.
