Ghanaian Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Killing Wife in Front of Child

Doe Fiano, a 60-year-old man, was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Accra High Court on July 21, 2025, for fatally shooting his wife, Grace Yorke Torku, in front of their four-year-old child.
Fiano pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received an additional 10-year sentence for illegal firearm possession, with both sentences to run concurrently, as ruled by Justice Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie.
The incident stemmed from an argument over a phone call Torku received from a male acquaintance, prompting Fiano to retrieve a pistol and shoot her in the head and genital area. Initially charged with murder, Fiano’s guilty plea to manslaughter under Section 296(1) of Act 30 reduced his sentence.
His defense highlighted his lack of prior criminal record, remorse, and role as the primary caregiver for their children, while the prosecution pushed for a 30-year minimum, citing the child’s trauma and the crime’s brutality.
The case was reported by Gordon Tsimese, an Assemblyman, after Fiano threatened passers-by, leading to his arrest at Nii Amui Park in Ashaiman. A June 6, 2023, autopsy confirmed death by unnatural gunshot wounds.
