Togbe Afede XIV Slams Corruption as Major Barrier to Ghana’s Development

Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, has identified corruption as a critical impediment to Ghana’s progress, urging political and traditional leaders to prioritize honesty and integrity.
Speaking at the Asogli Yam Festival in Ho on October 5, 2025, during the grand durbar themed “Honesty, Unity, Peace, and Prosperity,” he emphasized that systemic corruption stems from a failure to uphold truth and accountability, stalling national development.
“Corruption has been a stumbling block to our development and it is the result of our inability to hold on to the path of truth, the path of strictest honesty,” Togbe Afede declared. He called for unified leadership to foster a “just, peaceful, prosperous nation,” highlighting the festival’s theme as a blueprint for societal reform.
The Asogli leader’s remarks align with growing public frustration over governance lapses, as seen in recent scandals like the National Investment Bank (NIB) mismanagement and galamsey-related environmental damage. His call for integrity resonates with civil society demands for transparency, reinforcing the need for systemic change to unlock Ghana’s potential.
The festival, a cultural cornerstone celebrating the Volta Region’s heritage, served as a platform to rally leaders and citizens for collective action against corruption.
