Minister Leads First National Sanitation Day Exercise in Sunyani

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, on Saturday, January 3, joined chiefs and residents of Sunyani to observe the first National Sanitation Day of 2026.

The exercise brought together security agencies, traditional authorities, market women, traders, residents, and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to clean up the Bono Regional capital, with the aim of restoring Sunyani’s reputation as one of Ghana’s cleanest cities.

The cleanup exercise, which commenced at 7:00 a.m., covered major areas including the Sunyani business district, principal streets, markets, the Municipal Police Station, Twene Amanfo Senior High School, the VRA/NEDCo office, and the Estate Road leading to the Akyereko Memorial Hospital.

Activities undertaken included the removal of old posters, banners, and signages, clearing of filth and sand from road medians, flushing of choked gutters, and sweeping of streets across the municipality.

Addressing the media after the exercise, Mr. Ibrahim expressed satisfaction with the level of participation, describing it as encouraging.
“This is exactly what is expected of us, and if we continue like this, Sunyani will once again become the cleanest city in Ghana,” he said.

He noted that the attractiveness of a city goes beyond infrastructure, stressing the need for residents to take collective responsibility for maintaining cleanliness.
“When you enter the city, the ambience should reflect a beautiful and well-kept environment,” he added.

The Minister further encouraged the Municipal Assembly to embark on tree planting in buffer zones to help restore the city’s greenery.
Also speaking at the event, the National Sanitation Ambassador, Mr. Rashid Ahmed, called on the youth to actively engage in sanitation activities, emphasising that a clean environment is critical to public health and overall well-being.
