There are 5,000 schools under trees – Haruna Iddrisu

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu just revealed that a whopping 5,000 schools in Ghana are still operating under trees due to a lack of proper infrastructure.
He made this announcement at a public forum on education in Accra, where he expressed his concern about the impact of this phenomenon on academic activities.
The Minister acknowledged that this is a long-standing challenge, especially in rural and underserved areas, where teaching and learning often take place in open spaces or dilapidated structures.
To address this issue, the Mahama-led administration has committed to investing heavily in educational infrastructure, with the first phase of the project set to be unveiled in the 2025 budget statement.
The Minister assured that they will work to close the gaps in the education system, which has been hindered by limited access to formal school buildings, a shortage of educational facilities, and an underfunded education system in some regions
