Tarkwa Police Rescue 15-Year-Old Nigerian Girl from Sex Trafficker, Arrest 25-Year-Old Suspect

The Western Central Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) has rescued a 15-year-old Nigerian girl from sexual exploitation after she was trafficked from Enugu to Tarkwa, Ghana, for forced sex work.

The victim, now five weeks pregnant, was abducted in October 2025 and abused until her dramatic escape prompted a police intervention.

In a statement issued Monday, November 3, DOVVSU head ASP Beatrice Turkson detailed how the girl’s father, Ogbonno Onuigbo, reported her missing. On October 24, she contacted him secretly, revealing her ordeal. Investigations uncovered that 25-year-old Joy Ogbonna lured the teen via accomplice Golden Blessing (at large in Nigeria), promising a cleaning job in Lagos before transporting her to Aboso near Tarkwa. Ogbonna allegedly confined the girl in a room, compelled her into prostitution, and pocketed the earnings.

A passerby’s aid enabled the victim to call her father, leading to Ogbonna’s arrest on November 3.

She was medically examined, confirming pregnancy and trauma, and is now in protective care. Ogbonna, in custody, faces charges under the Human Trafficking Act, 2005 (Act 694), with court appearance imminent.

The police commended public vigilance and reaffirmed their anti-trafficking commitment, urging tips via 18555 or the nearest station. This rescue highlights a 20% rise in cross-border trafficking in 2025, per NACOC data, often targeting minors for exploitation.
