Suspected Thief Dies in Police Custody in Ahafo Region Amid Assault Allegations

A 28-year-old man, identified as Kweku, has died while in police custody at Techimantia in the Tano South Municipality of Ghana’s Ahafo Region, following his arrest for allegedly threatening to kill his grandmother.

The incident unfolded after the elderly woman reported the threat to local police, leading to Kweku’s detention on December 10, 2025. Sources close to the matter allege that officers assaulted him during the arrest, exacerbating his condition.

Kweku reportedly went without food for a full day, leaving him severely weakened. He was rushed to Techimantia Government Hospital for urgent treatment but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

Regional police command has launched an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, including the assault claims and denial of sustenance. Authorities have not yet released an official statement, but the case has drawn sharp criticism from human rights advocates, who decry it as part of a troubling pattern of custodial deaths in Ghana.

This marks the latest in a series of controversial fatalities in police cells, raising urgent calls for reforms to prevent abuse and ensure detainee welfare.
