Ghana Gets Extra Long Weekend: Friday, January 9 Declared Public Holiday for Constitution Day

The government has announced that Friday, January 9, 2026, will be a nationwide public holiday to celebrate Constitution Day.
Normally falling on January 7, this year’s observance has been moved to Friday by President John Dramani Mahama through an Executive Instrument. The shift creates a long weekend and allows more Ghanaians to take part in national activities.
The announcement was made in a statement dated January 2, 2026, from the Ministry of the Interior and signed by Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP).
The change follows Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended, which gives the President power to adjust holiday dates for greater public convenience.
The Ministry urged everyone to note the new date and observe the holiday accordingly.
Constitution Day marks the coming into force of Ghana’s 1992 Fourth Republican Constitution on January 7, 1993, and celebrates the country’s return to democratic rule.
