Suspected Thief Arrested While Cutting Streetlight Cables in Accra

A suspected thief has been caught allegedly attempting to steal underground copper cables powering streetlights along the Anyaa–Ablekuma stretch in Accra.

The suspect was reportedly found at the scene with a hacksaw while allegedly cutting the cables buried beneath the road.

The cables form part of the electrical infrastructure supplying power to streetlights along the busy stretch. Their removal could disrupt street lighting and potentially create safety concerns for motorists, pedestrians and residents, particularly at night.

The suspect was reportedly apprehended before he could complete the operation and remove the cables from the area.

The extent of damage caused to the street lighting system is yet to be established. It is also unclear whether the suspect was acting alone or as part of a larger group involved in the theft of electrical cables.

Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and determine the appropriate legal action against the suspect.
