Six-Year-Old Girl Drowns in Uncovered Septic Tank at Gbetsile Amid Water Shortage Concerns

A six-year-old girl has reportedly drowned in an uncovered septic tank at Liberty Estate in Gbetsile, a community in the Tema area, in a tragic incident that has renewed concerns over persistent water shortages in the area.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, May 24, 2026, when the girl, identified by residents as Abi, went to a neighbour’s home in search of water.
According to[Channel One TV the child accidentally fell into the uncovered septic tank and drowned before help could arrive.
The incident has thrown the community into mourning, with residents blaming the tragedy partly on the lack of reliable access to clean water.
Residents say ongoing water shortages frequently force children to move from house to house searching for water, exposing them to dangerous situations.
Community members are now calling on authorities to urgently improve water supply in the area and enforce safety measures to ensure hazardous structures such as septic tanks are properly covered and secured.
“This beautiful soul was lost simply because there is no water,” one grieving resident reportedly said.
The tragedy has intensified calls for immediate intervention to improve both public safety and access to basic social amenities within the community.
