Seven Women Arrested for Allegedly Selling Palm Oil Mixed with Harmful Dye

Seven women have been arrested at Akyem Maase in the Eastern Region for allegedly possessing palm oil adulterated with a potentially dangerous industrial chemical.

According to the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), the substance involved is Sudan dye, which is sometimes illegally added to palm oil to enhance its deep red colour and attract buyers.

However, health officials warn that Sudan dye is not safe for consumption and has been linked to an increased risk of cancer-related diseases.

The arrests form part of an ongoing crackdown by authorities to curb the distribution and sale of unsafe and adulterated food products across the country.

The suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations.

The FDA has urged the public to remain vigilant when purchasing palm oil and other food items, advising consumers to:

Buy from trusted and verified sources

Be cautious of unusually bright or overly red palm oil

Report suspicious products to authorities

The Authority emphasised that ensuring food safety remains a critical public health priority.
