Seven illegal miners have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a mining pit at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region.
Four other miners are still feared trapped underground as rescue teams continue efforts to reach them following the incident on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The collapse reportedly occurred at about 11:00 p.m. while the miners were working inside the pit in search of gold.
According to Citi News sources, two miners who were outside the pit at the time of the collapse rushed to the community to seek assistance.
Residents subsequently mobilised a search and rescue team and alerted the Police and other emergency agencies.
Rescue operations continued throughout the night, resulting in the recovery of the remains of seven of the 11 miners believed to have been trapped beneath the debris.
Five of the deceased have reportedly been identified as residents of Moseaso, while the remaining two are said to be members of the Asaman Tamfoe community.
Personnel from the Anyinam District Police Command, the Ghana National Ambulance Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), together with community volunteers, are currently at the scene.
The rescue teams are working to locate and recover the remaining four miners who are believed to still be trapped underground.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with illegal mining activities, particularly the risks posed by unstable and poorly secured mining pits.
Authorities are expected to continue the rescue operation and investigate the circumstances that led to the collapse.
