Senegal Lift Second AFCON Title After Dramatic Extra-Time Win Over Morocco

Senegal clinched their second Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) crown in dramatic fashion, defeating hosts Morocco 1-0 in the final on Sunday, January 19, 2026, thanks to Pape Gueye’s extra-time strike.

The decisive goal arrived just four minutes into extra time, sealing a hard-fought victory for the Teranga Lions and denying Morocco a first continental title since 1976.

The match had been tightly contested and largely low on clear chances throughout normal time. However, chaotic scenes erupted in the 24th minute of stoppage time when VAR intervened to award Morocco a penalty.

Brahim Díaz stepped up with the chance to win the tournament in what was effectively the final kick of the game — and end his nation’s 50-year wait for AFCON glory. Under immense pressure, Díaz attempted a chipped down-the-middle shot, but Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy stood firm, collecting the ball with ease.

The lengthy delay before the spot-kick, combined with the award itself, sparked angry reactions on the touchline and in the stands. Senegal players briefly walked off the pitch in protest, while clashes broke out between Senegal fans and security as some attempted to invade the field.

Despite late opportunities in extra time — including a powerful header from Nayef Aguerd that struck the bar for Morocco — Senegal held firm under torrential rain to lift the trophy.

The final was marred by unsavoury incidents, raising concerns over crowd control and officiating, especially as Morocco had positioned the tournament as a test event ahead of their co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Senegal’s triumph cements their status as one of Africa’s modern powerhouses, while Morocco’s campaign, though ending in heartbreak, showcased their growing stature on the continental stage.
