Saudi Arabia Hold Uruguay to 1-1 Draw in Stunning World Cup Opener

Saudi Arabia produced one of the biggest surprises of the opening round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday, holding former champions Uruguay to a 1-1 draw in their Group H encounter.

The Saudis took an early lead and defended resolutely for much of the match. Despite facing sustained pressure from Uruguay, goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais delivered an outstanding performance, making several crucial saves to frustrate the South Americans.

Uruguay dominated possession and spent long periods in the Saudi half, especially after the break. However, Al-Owais and the Saudi defence stood firm as the underdogs protected their advantage deep into the second half.

The breakthrough for Uruguay finally came in the 80th minute when Maxi Araújo reacted quickest to a loose ball following a headed effort, firing home the equaliser to rescue a point for his side.

Araújo’s late strike cancelled out Saudi Arabia’s first-half opener, ensuring the match ended level. While Uruguay avoided defeat, the result is still being hailed as a major achievement for Saudi Arabia against one of the tournament’s traditional powerhouses.

The draw leaves Group H finely balanced as both teams prepare for their remaining group-stage fixtures.
