GFA Sacks Otto Addo as Black Stars Head Coach with Immediate Effect

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced the immediate dismissal of Otto Addo as head coach of the senior men’s national team, the Black Stars.

The decision was made following a high-level meeting between the GFA and the Ministry of Sports in Stuttgart, Germany, after the team’s 2-1 defeat to Germany on Monday evening.

This loss marked Ghana’s second consecutive defeat in pre-World Cup friendlies, coming just days after a humiliating 5-1 thrashing by Austria.

With less than three months to go before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the GFA cited the recent poor results as the primary reason for parting ways with the 50-year-old coach, who had been reappointed to lead the Black Stars earlier in 2024.

In an official statement, the GFA expressed gratitude to Addo for his service:

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo effective immediately. The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”

The GFA has not yet announced a replacement or an interim coach, but it is expected that an announcement regarding the technical team will be made in the coming days as preparations for the World Cup intensify.

The sacking has sparked widespread debate among Ghanaian football fans and stakeholders, with many questioning the timing and the team’s readiness for the global tournament.
