Sammi Awuku Accuses NDC of Plotting One-Party Takeover Under President Mahama

Akuapem North Member of Parliament Sammi Awuku has leveled serious accusations against the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming the party is undermining Ghana’s democratic institutions in a bid to establish a one-party state under President John Dramani Mahama.
In a statement posted on social media on Thursday, December 11, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker highlighted several recent developments as evidence of this alleged erosion of democracy. These include the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, the controversial Kpandai parliamentary rerun, and proposed constitutional amendments that could impact key independent offices.
Awuku warned that these actions, if left unchallenged, pose a significant risk to the nation’s stability. “There appears to be a deliberate and coordinated attempt to tilt Ghana toward a one-party state and weaken the institutional foundations that keep our nation stable and accountable,” he stated.
He called on civil society, the clergy, and other influential figures to speak out, emphasizing that “our silence today could cost us the country we hope to leave for the next generation. We must protect our democracy because we owe future generations this sacred responsibility.”
Additionally, Awuku urged President Mahama to reject any suggestions of pursuing a third term, which would contravene Ghana’s constitutional two-term limit for presidents. “Mr President, this is the time to protect your legacy, not gamble with it. Those urging you to alter constitutional limits or entertain ideas of extended or lifelong leadership are not serving the national interest,” he wrote.
Referencing past leaders, Awuku noted, “Rawlings never went down that path. President Kufuor never did. President Mills never did. President Akufo-Addo never did. Our past leaders respected the boundaries set by the Constitution, and so must we all.”
The lawmaker appealed to all Ghanaians, irrespective of political affiliation, to safeguard democratic processes and prevent any individual or party from amassing unchecked power.
In response, Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga has stated that the NDC has no plans to push for a third term for President Mahama.
This comes amid heightened political tensions following recent elections and institutional changes in Ghana.
