Robbery Suspect Collapses and Dies After Re-Arrest in Upper East

The Upper East Regional Police Command says a 20-year-old robbery suspect it re-arrested at Sapeliga has collapsed and died.
According to a police statement dated 22 October 2026, the suspect, Muntari Munumi, was leading the police to arrest his accomplices when he complained of dizziness and collapsed.
The police also retrieved an M16 A2 assault rifle, three live rounds of ammunition and five spent shells from the suspect.
Preliminary investigations indicate that two men were returning home from Bazua after work when they were attacked at Sapeliga Junction in Kobore. The police say the suspect took their Royal motorbike, three mobile phones and GH¢1,820.
The two men fought back and took the weapon from him after he failed to hit the target after firing several rounds, the police say.
They then called the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee, which mobilised, arrested the suspect and handed him over to the police with the rifle.
The police say he later named his accomplices and his source of weapons and offered to lead officers to them. On the way, he complained of dizziness.
“While on the way, the suspect complained of dizziness and suddenly fell unconscious. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The body has since been deposited at the Morgue for preservation and autopsy.”
Efforts are under way to arrest his accomplices.
