Ghana Police Bust Major Robbery Syndicate Involving Security Officers

Ghanaian security agencies have arrested seven suspects, including three police officers and two military personnel, in a major operation to dismantle a sophisticated robbery syndicate operating across the country.

The gang has been linked to several violent robberies in Accra, Tema, Anyinam, Kumasi, and Takoradi, where they targeted victims for cash, gold, and mercury.

The investigation was triggered by a complaint from Ivorian investor Mousa Bamba. He was lured to the Dzorwulu suburb of Accra under the pretense of buying six kilograms of gold worth $450,000. Upon arrival, suspects posing as military personnel and officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) robbed him at gunpoint.

Initial arrests included Mohammed Umaro (also known as Alhaji) and Gabriel Sewornu (alias Dangote). Further investigations led to the arrest of Justin Oduro (also known as Don King or Mafia), Clement Gyasi, and Farouk Zakari.

The operation intensified over the weekend. On 23 and 24 May, intelligence-led raids resulted in the arrest of three more suspects.

The arrested security personnel are:

Lance Corporal Eugene Akurugu

Lance Corporal Emmanuel Arko (also known as Bullet)

Inspector Richmond Osei

Corporal Gideon Anor

Lance Corporal Felix Deku Tetteyga

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that the three implicated police officers have been interdicted to allow investigations to proceed without interference.

All seven suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations. Police say operations are still underway to track down and arrest other accomplices linked to the network.
