Renowned Artist Ibrahim Mahama Meets Police Management Board as Probe into Alleged Assault by Officers Intensifies

Incident Reportedly Involved “Black Maria” Team – IGP Refers Case to Professional Standards Bureau; Northern Regional Commander Also Invited to Accra

Renowned Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama is currently in a high-level meeting with the Police Management Board as investigations deepen into allegations that he was assaulted by police officers on March 21, 2026.

The alleged assault is said to have occurred in Tamale during a traffic-related incident. Mahama claimed the attackers were members of the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, popularly known as the “Black Maria.”

However, the team, led by Abdul Bawa Jalil, has strongly denied any involvement, insisting none of its personnel were present or participated in the incident.

Investigation Escalates

In response to the serious allegations, the matter has been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau, the internal body tasked with investigating misconduct within the Ghana Police Service.

As part of efforts to establish the facts and ensure full accountability, the Inspector-General of Police has invited both Ibrahim Mahama and the Northern Regional Police Commander to Accra to assist with the ongoing inquiries.

The meeting with the Police Management Board is expected to provide clearer insight into the circumstances of the incident and help determine whether any police personnel were involved and if there was any misconduct.

Public Concern

The case has drawn widespread public attention and concern, with many Ghanaians and members of the arts community calling for a transparent, thorough, and impartial investigation, especially given Mahama’s prominent status as one of Ghana’s most internationally acclaimed contemporary artists.

Mahama had earlier revealed that the assault left him with injuries including a lost tooth, rib pain, headaches, and speech difficulties, forcing him to cancel several major international engagements.

Police authorities have assured the public that updates on the investigation will be provided as soon as significant progress is made.

The outcome of today’s engagements and the Professional Standards Bureau probe is being keenly awaited.
