Pythons Disrupt Power Supply as ECG Engineers Brave Danger in Ahodwo

Engineers from the Electricity Company of Ghana risked their lives to restore electricity after pythons invaded a transformer at Ahodwo in the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred on April 24, 2026, when a fault on a distribution line (feeder) caused a power outage affecting residents along the Ahodwo–Daban–Dr. Asafo Adjei Road.
A fault team from ECG’s Ahinsan District was dispatched to investigate and restore supply. While they managed to reconnect power to some areas, residents around the Cocoa Depot and Star Sawmill enclave remained without electricity.
In an effort to fully restore power, the team moved to a nearby transformer to replace a faulty fuse. However, upon arrival, they discovered a python had taken over the substation.
According to the Ahinsan District Engineer, Kwaku Appiah, attempts by residents to capture the snake were unsuccessful as it slithered beneath the structure.
Despite the danger, the engineers proceeded with the repair works and successfully restored power.
Officials from the Kumasi Zoo were later called in to assist. During the operation, another python was discovered, along with eggs, suggesting the reptiles had been inhabiting the substation for weeks.
Meanwhile, ECG’s Ashanti West Regional General Manager, George Amoah, has urged customers to promptly report outages through official ECG communication channels, including their stakeholder WhatsApp platforms, to ensure quick response and resolution.
The unusual incident highlights both the risks faced by utility workers and the unexpected challenges that can disrupt essential services
