Policeman Caught on Video Allegedly Assaulting ECG Staff Over Unpaid Bills

A police officer has come under scrutiny after a viral video allegedly showed him assaulting staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), as well as a CID officer, during a confrontation over unpaid electricity bills.
The officer, identified as Sergeant Matthew and reportedly stationed at Madina, is said to have engaged in the incident at his residence in Pantang, within the Adentan Municipality.
Disconnection dispute
According to reports, ECG personnel had visited the premises to disconnect electricity supply over an outstanding bill of GH¢13,191.69.
Sources indicate that the property had been disconnected more than six times in recent months due to non-payment, with the officer allegedly reconnecting power shortly after each disconnection.
Tensions escalate
The situation reportedly escalated when ECG staff attempted to record the incident, prompting the officer’s reaction.
In the widely circulated video, he is heard confronting the workers, questioning their actions:
“Are you taking videos of me without my consent?”
ECG staff allege that the officer assaulted them during the altercation and seized electricity cables belonging to the company.
Safety concerns raised
The incident has left some ECG personnel shaken, raising concerns about the safety of field workers who enforce disconnections and other operational duties.
Authorities are yet to officially comment on the matter, but the video has sparked public debate over accountability and the conduct of security personnel.
Investigations are expected to follow as calls grow for clarity and possible disciplinary action.
