The Ghana Police Service is set to deploy a new digital traffic law enforcement system, Traffitech, nationwide from October 1, 2026, as part of efforts to automate traffic enforcement, improve compliance and reduce human interference and opportunities for corruption.
The system forms part of broader efforts by the Police to modernise traffic law enforcement and strengthen adherence to road traffic regulations.
Test operations begin September 14
Speaking at a national sensitisation programme on the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1153) and the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519), Director of Education, Research and Training at the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, said Traffitech would use digital tools to address human behaviours that contribute to preventable road crashes.
He said the system would also minimise direct human involvement in traffic enforcement and reduce opportunities for corruption.
According to the Police, test operations will begin on September 14, 2026, ahead of the nationwide rollout on October 1.
How Traffitech will work
Chief Superintendent Obeng explained that cameras deployed on the roads will provide real-time information to help identify vehicles and their owners when traffic offences occur.
“We have made smart investments; we will not have to go to court manually, take people to the police station and all that. Instead, on the road, we will deploy cameras that will give us a real-time feed of who owns the vehicle,” he said.
The system will enable authorities to identify the registered owner of a vehicle, the holder of the relevant licence and the vehicle involved in an alleged traffic offence.
An electronic notice of violation will then be issued to the relevant person in accordance with the law, within 14 days, he explained.
Electronic notices for traffic violations
Under the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026, Traffitech provides for the issuance of an electronic notice of violation by a police officer or authorised agent.
The notice must be issued in the prescribed form contained in the Tenth Schedule of the regulations.
The Police say the digital system is intended to make traffic enforcement more efficient while reducing the need for manual processes and direct interactions between motorists and enforcement officers.
