Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema has paid tribute to Ghana’s late former President Jerry John Rawlings, describing him as a symbol of African leadership, patriotism and commitment to continental development.
President Oligui Nguema made the remarks on Thursday, July 30, after laying a wreath at the graveside of the former Ghanaian leader at the Military Cemetery in Accra as part of his official visit to Ghana.
The ceremony was held to honour the legacy of President Rawlings and reaffirm the longstanding relations between Ghana and Gabon.
In his tribute, President Oligui Nguema praised Rawlings’ leadership, describing him as a statesman whose contributions to Ghana and Africa had secured him a place in history.
The Gabonese leader said President Rawlings’ vision for a stronger and more united Africa reflected his commitment to justice, progress and development across the continent.
“In this place of remembrance, I would like to hail the contribution of this great man to a strong Africa, a united Africa, resolutely turned towards its own development,” he said.
President Oligui Nguema further noted that the former Ghanaian leader’s dedication to national development and advocacy for good governance continued to serve as an inspiration to future generations.
He also highlighted the influence of President Rawlings’ speeches and writings, particularly on governance and political transitions, saying they contributed to Gabon’s recent transition process.
Jerry John Rawlings, who led Ghana as Head of State from 1981 to 2001, played a significant role in the country’s transition to constitutional democracy in 1992. He remained an influential voice on governance and African affairs until his death in 2020.
