Parents seeking preferred senior high schools (SHSs) for their wards have been cautioned against falling victim to fraudsters who claim they can manipulate BECE results or influence the school placement process.
Kwame Nti Yeboah, Ahafo Regional Secretary of the National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTA), said some individuals operating on social media were exploiting the anxiety of parents by promising to alter examination results or secure placements through unofficial channels.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, he urged parents to deal directly with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for assistance with their wards’ results and placement.
“There are unscrupulous people on social media who are contacting parents that they can help change the results.”
Parents Urged to Use Official Channels
Mr Nti Yeboah advised parents to use the official contact numbers provided by GES and WAEC rather than relying on intermediaries whose identities and claims cannot be verified.
“But GES and WAEC have released contact numbers so I will advise parents to use those numbers instead of dealing with third parties who may not be legitimate because a lot of these people are fake.”
He cautioned parents to remain particularly vigilant on social media, where fraudsters may demand money or sensitive personal information while claiming to have access to the placement system.
NCPTA Welcomes New School Selection Arrangement
Mr Nti Yeboah also welcomed the government’s decision to conduct school selection after the release of BECE results, describing it as an improvement over the previous arrangement.
He explained that under the earlier system, schools were selected before candidates’ examination results were known, which could create difficulties for parents and students.
“Initially schools were selected before the results are realised but we commend the government on the decision for schools to be selected after the release of the results.”
“We are happy with it and believe it is a step in the right direction.”
Private SHSs Offer Alternative for Unplaced Candidates
The Ministry of Education released the 2026 senior high school placement for qualified BECE graduates last Friday, amid mixed reactions from parents and guardians.
With thousands of candidates reportedly left without placement under the current arrangements, the Conference of Heads (Proprietors) of Private Second-Cycle Schools (CHOPSS) has released its 2026 list of private second-cycle schools in good standing.
The list could provide an alternative for families considering private SHSs for candidates who did not secure placements in their preferred schools.
Mr Nti Yeboah reiterated the need for parents to exercise caution throughout the placement process and avoid individuals who promise guaranteed placements or changes to examination results for a fee.
Parents have been encouraged to verify all placement-related information through official GES and WAEC channels before making payments or sharing personal information.
