Over 40% of Menopausal Women Reportedly Experience Reduced Sexual Desire – Health Officer

Health Promotion Officer at the Dormaa Central Municipal Health Directorate, Adu-Darko Kofi, has disclosed that research indicates that more than 40% of women going through menopause experience reduced desire for sexual intimacy.

Speaking on Nkwa Hia, a health education programme on GIFTs FM, Mr. Adu-Darko explained that although menopause is not a disease, the transition can bring physical and emotional changes that may affect women’s sexual health and overall well-being.

He said some menopausal women may experience vaginal swelling and pain, urinary difficulties, sudden or frequent urination, fear and anxiety, as well as a reduction in sexual desire.

Mr. Adu-Darko therefore urged husbands and partners to understand and support women during the menopausal stage rather than subjecting them to intimidation or seeking sexual partners elsewhere.

He stressed the importance of patience, communication and support as women adjust to the changes associated with menopause.

Meanwhile, Senior Health Promotion Officer at the Municipal Health Directorate, Seth Twum, said irregular menstrual flow is among the signs that may occur during the menopausal transition.

He added that women may also experience sudden hot flashes, night sweats, reduced sexual feelings, vaginal dryness and changes in behaviour, among other symptoms.

Mr. Twum encouraged women experiencing symptoms associated with menopause to seek appropriate medical advice and support from qualified health professionals.

He said seeking professional guidance can help women better understand the changes they are experiencing and receive appropriate care where necessary.
