Health Minister Promises Regular Nursing Trainee Allowance Payments

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured nursing trainees in Ghana that their allowances, referred to as “alawa,” will be paid regularly moving forward.
This commitment addresses past complaints from students about delays and partial payments, with some even completing their courses without receiving their full entitlements.
According to recent reports, the government has already disbursed GH¢462 million to cover six months’ worth of allowances for over 120,000 nursing trainees, with payments starting on July 16, 2025, and continuing through the following Friday.
This initiative fulfills a key campaign promise by President John Dramani Mahama, aimed at improving the welfare of nursing trainees and supporting the health sector.
The Minister emphasized ongoing efforts to ensure timely and consistent payments to prevent future delays.
