Over 1,000 Homes Submerged After Weija Dam Spillage – MP Warns Residents to Stay Away from Floodwaters

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed, has described the flooding situation in the constituency as critical following the spillage of the Weija Dam.

According to the MP, more than 1,000 homes have been submerged, leaving hundreds of residents displaced and stranded in dangerous conditions.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning programme Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Ahmed said floodwaters in some communities have risen beyond six feet, making movement extremely hazardous.

“In some places the water level is beyond six feet, so if you can’t swim, don’t even dare,” he warned, adding that some residents had climbed trees to escape the rising waters.

He described the situation as devastating, comparing some flooded roads and communities to “driving in the sea.”

The MP also criticized the lack of prior communication before the dam spillage, claiming residents were not adequately informed ahead of the exercise.

“My people had no notice,” he stated, noting that unlike previous years, there was little engagement between local authorities and the Ghana Water Company Limited before the release of water from the dam.

According to him, the lack of coordination worsened the emergency response and left many communities unprepared for the sudden flooding.

To support affected residents, Mr. Ahmed disclosed that he had rented Kia trucks to assist with evacuations, while some displaced families have temporarily been lodged in guest houses.

He further revealed that discussions have begun with local authorities on possible dredging works using DIP machines to improve drainage and reduce future flood risks.

Describing the disaster as a national security concern, the MP called for urgent intervention from the military, police, and the Ghana National Fire Service to strengthen evacuation and rescue operations.

He also cautioned that the situation could deteriorate further if additional spillways of the dam are opened.

Emergency teams continue to evacuate residents from flooded communities as authorities monitor the situation across affected parts of Weija and surrounding areas.
