Oppong Nkrumah Credits NPP for Cedi Appreciation, Rejects NDC Claims

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has rebuffed National Democratic Congress (NDC) assertions that the recent strengthening of the Ghanaian cedi is attributable to their administration, insisting the gains originated in the final quarter of 2024 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the former Information Minister said: “The appreciation started in the last quarter of 2024 when the Gold for Reserves programme took effect, gold prices rallied, and we were able to build reserves and even have an excess.”
He challenged NDC claims on the exchange rate at handover: “The government lied that when they came into office, the dollar was at 17. On January 7, when they took over, the rate was actually about 14.”
Oppong Nkrumah referenced the Bank of Ghana’s 2024 Annual Report and Financial Statements, signed by Governor Dr. Asiamah, as evidence supporting the NPP’s role in initiating the recovery.
The exchange highlights partisan debate over economic achievements as the cedi continues its upward trajectory in early 2026.
