Odau Group Breaks Away from Akyem Abuakwa After 250 Years

The Chiefs, Queen Mothers, and Elders of the Odau group in the Benkum Division have formally announced their separation from the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, ending a 250-year relationship.

In a historic decision, the group has installed Odeniho Okukudurofo Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe as their new leader and declared Etwereso as the traditional capital of the newly formed Odau Traditional Area.

Historic Breakaway

Speaking on behalf of the chiefs and elders, Baffour Osei Afrifa confirmed that the Odau group has officially withdrawn from the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council.

He described the move as a significant turning point in the history of the Akyem people, marking the end of a long-standing association.

Reasons Behind the Decision

The separation follows years of tension between the Odau leadership and the Akyem Abuakwa Overlord, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin.

According to the group, the dispute intensified after the withdrawal of the Daasebre title and restrictions placed on the Odau leadership’s access to the Ofori Panin Fie.

These developments, they say, contributed to the decision to establish an independent traditional authority.

A New Traditional Authority

The Odau leadership has indicated plans to seek formal government recognition by applying for certification to operate as an independent Traditional Council.

They emphasised that governance of traditional affairs within the new Odau Traditional Area will now be handled exclusively by their own leadership.

Call for Unity and Development

Addressing the gathering, the newly installed overlord, Odeniho Okukudurofo Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe, expressed gratitude to the Aduana Royal Family and elders for their confidence in his leadership.

He pledged to safeguard the land, culture, and resources of the Odau people, while calling for unity and collective effort to drive development in the area.

The breakaway marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Odau group as they chart an independent path in traditional governance.
