Education Minister Orders Withdrawal of GTEC Letters on Post-Retirement Contracts

The Minister for Education has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to withdraw its earlier communications concerning post-retirement contracts for senior academic staff in public universities.

The directive affects letters issued on September 30 and October 1, 2025, which addressed the engagement of retired academic senior members on contract.

According to a statement from the Ministry, the decision follows a high-level meeting with the University Teachers Association of Ghana, a key stakeholder in the country’s tertiary education sector.

The Ministry explained that the withdrawal is intended to create room for broader consultations before any final policy direction is determined.

The move is aimed at ensuring that any future decision reflects “broad consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and serves the best interests of Ghana’s tertiary education sector.”

The development signals a pause in the implementation of the earlier directive, as government engages stakeholders to reach a more widely accepted approach on post-retirement appointments in public universities.

The outcome of these consultations is expected to shape future policy on how experienced academic staff are retained within Ghana’s higher education system.
