50 Nigerians Arrested in Ghana for Suspected Human Trafficking and Cybercrime

In a decisive crackdown on illegal activities, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) arrested approximately 50 Nigerian nationals in a dawn operation at McCarthy Hills, Ga South Municipality, Greater Accra Region, on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

The raid targeted a suspected hub of human trafficking and cybercrime, following credible intelligence about the illegal stay of foreign nationals in the area.

According to a statement issued by Assistant Commissioner of Immigration M. Amoako-Atta, Head of Public Affairs at GIS, the operation was prompted by disturbing reports of individuals being trafficked into Ghana and coerced into cyber fraud, commonly referred to as “sakawa” or “Yahoo-Yahoo.” The suspects were allegedly forced by their facilitators to engage in fraudulent online activities.

Among those detained was the landlord of the apartment believed to be the base for these illicit operations. The GIS emphasized that the property served as a central hub for the suspected trafficking and fraud network.

The Immigration Service has launched a thorough investigation to uncover the full scope of the criminal activities and identify all individuals involved. Authorities have assured the public that further updates will be provided as the probe progresses.

This operation underscores Ghana’s ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and cybercrime, which continue to pose significant challenges in the region. The GIS remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of the public while addressing illegal activities within the country’s borders.
