Obuasi SHS Closed Indefinitely After Students Assault Headmaster Over Alleged Buried Baby

The Obuasi Senior High Technical School has been closed indefinitely following unrest sparked by allegations that the school’s headmaster buried the body of a baby on the campus.

Information available to Citi News from the Obuasi Municipal Directorate of Education indicates that the decision to shut down the school followed the assault on the headmaster by students and the vandalisation of school property.

According to reports, the incident occurred between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. after a student claimed to have seen the headmaster’s vehicle parked near the school’s refuse dump.

The student reportedly raised an alarm, attracting other students to the scene, where they allegedly discovered the body of a baby believed to be between five and six months old.

The students subsequently confronted the headmaster, accusing him of burying the baby on the school premises. The confrontation turned violent, with the students allegedly assaulting the headmaster and vandalising parts of the school’s property.

The headmaster sustained multiple injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately investigate the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable is dealt with in accordance with the law.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, and signed by the Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Apaak, the ministry condemned the violence, describing the assault on the headmaster and the destruction of school property as criminal and unacceptable.

The ministry stressed that all investigations and any subsequent disciplinary actions must be conducted in line with the laws and regulations governing Ghana’s education sector.

It also urged all stakeholders to remain calm and allow the appropriate authorities to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

Six people have been reportedly arrested in connection with the incident. Police have since commenced investigations into the matter.
