NPP Vows Retaliation After Abronye’s Arrest Sparks Political Tensions

Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has promised to seek revenge against the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the arrest of NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, known as Abronye.

Speaking outside the Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday, September 9, Mustapha angrily declared, “Power has an end, the tables will turn, and we will all have our revenge.”

Abronye was remanded into police custody on Tuesday and is set to return to court on Friday, September 12. The Ghana Police Service arrested him on Monday, September 8, for “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace,” though specific details about his actions remain undisclosed.

Abronye, a prominent and outspoken NPP figure, recently made headlines by applying for political asylum in eight countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, Germany, and Côte d’Ivoire. He claims the government is targeting him and other opposition members through state security agencies, citing political persecution and threats to his life.

As part of their investigation, police searched the home of former NPP Youth Organiser Moses Abor on Sunday but did not find Abronye there. The case, which has drawn widespread attention, underscores growing tensions between the NPP and the NDC-led government.

The court will revisit the case on Friday to address the charges and determine the next steps.
