Mahama’s Government Hails First Year Success: Economy Stronger, Cedi Up 30%, Living Costs Down

Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for turning around Ghana’s economy in just one year, saying the country is now in a far better place than when the NDC took over power.

Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues programme on Sunday, January 4, 2026, during a review of the President’s first year in office, Kwakye Ofosu said all key economic indicators are moving in the right direction.

“Any fair-minded person would agree that Ghana is much stronger today than it was a year ago. The economy was the biggest concern for voters back then, and we’ve made real progress,” he said.

He highlighted that the government has kept its promises to Ghanaians, pointing to clear improvements people can feel in daily life.

Key achievements mentioned include:

  • A significant drop in the cost of living, with prices of many goods coming down.
  • The Ghana Cedi appreciating by nearly 30% against major currencies over the year—the first such strong annual gain in many years.
  • Better control over currency depreciation, which used to drive up prices and worry the economy.

“This stability in the Cedi has helped lower costs across sectors,” Kwakye Ofosu explained.

The Minister stressed that comparing Ghana today to a year ago shows clear evidence of positive change, adding that the administration has “done well” in delivering results for citizens.

These claims come as the government marks one year since President Mahama’s return to office, with officials confident that the economic recovery is on track.
