Akomea Dismisses Claims Bawumia Caused NPP’s 2024 Election Defeat

Nana Akomea, Chairman of the Communications Directorate for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, has rejected claims by Bryan Acheampong that Bawumia’s candidature was the primary reason for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo programme, Nana Akomea described the assertion as mere conjecture, arguing that it is not supported by any credible research or empirical evidence.

According to him, multiple independent research works conducted before the 2024 elections—including studies by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Afrobarometer, and Global InfoAnalytics—consistently attributed the NPP’s loss to broader national challenges, particularly deteriorating living conditions and public dissatisfaction with governance, rather than the party’s presidential candidate.

He further cited post-election research conducted in 2025, including the Prof. Mike Ocquaye Committee report and findings by Germany’s Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, which similarly concluded that public disaffection with the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration was the dominant factor behind the party’s electoral defeat.

Nana Akomea stressed that none of these widely referenced reports identified Dr Bawumia’s candidature as a cause of the NPP’s loss, challenging Bryan Acheampong to produce at least one credible survey or study to support his claim.

He also pointed to more recent surveys ahead of the NPP’s January presidential primaries, including those by Global InfoAnalytics and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, which indicate growing popularity for Dr Bawumia among party delegates.

According to Nana Akomea, these findings further undermine claims that Bawumia was responsible for the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections, insisting that the data clearly tell a different story
