NPP Veteran Nana Obiri Boahen Hails Naa Torshie’s Switch to Kennedy Agyapong as ‘Good Riddance’ for Party

Prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Nana Obiri Boahen has sharply criticized former Tema West MP and ex-District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) Administrator Irene Naa Torshie Addo, accusing her of playing a major role in the party’s crushing 2024 election defeat – and welcoming her recent defection to Kennedy Agyapong’s camp as a positive step forward.
In a candid video statement circulating on social media, Obiri Boahen – a former Deputy General Secretary of the NPP – declared:
“Naa Torshie contributed largely to the NPP’s defeat, so her move to Kennedy Agyapong’s camp is a good omen and good riddance.”
The remarks, shared widely on platforms like X , come amid heightened factional tensions within the NPP as the party gears up for its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026. Naa Torshie, once a key ally of defeated flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, publicly aligned with Agyapong’s camp in mid-October 2025, sparking backlash from her former supporters.
Backlash and Blame Game
Naa Torshie’s switch has divided loyalties. A group of her erstwhile “working team members” in Tema – who backed her during Bawumia’s campaign – issued a stinging disclaimer on October 18, 2025, disowning her for prioritizing “personal ambition” over party unity. They accused her of chasing a “non-viable” vice-presidential slot and highlighted her failure to deliver in Tema West despite heavy investments: “She was with us in Tema West, invested heavily, and we still lost.”
Obiri Boahen’s comments echo broader criticisms leveled at Naa Torshie for the NPP’s 2024 debacle. Former Ho Municipal Chief Executive Divine Bosson in November 2025 blamed her “autocratic and self-centered” leadership at the DACF for withholding funds from Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), crippling local campaigns and contributing to the party’s loss of over 100 parliamentary seats.
Allegations also surfaced that she delayed fertilizer supplies to farmers, initially pinned on ex-Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.
Naa Torshie has fired back, denying responsibility during a November 24 media engagement while on a regional tour for Agyapong. She pointed fingers at the Presidency and Bawumia – who chaired the Economic Management Team – for directing fund allocations, calling party blame “unfair.
Obiri Boahen’s NPP History and the Bigger Picture
A vocal Bawumia supporter during the 2023 primaries, Obiri Boahen previously dismissed Agyapong’s victory claims as “delusional,” insisting no one could beat Bawumia.
Post-2024 defeat – which he called “not normal” and hinted at irregularities like absent military at polls – Obiri Boahen has distanced himself from party probes, citing his exclusion from the campaign team despite contributions.
He later slammed the NPP’s defeat report as “full of lies,” rejecting claims of religious bias against Bawumia.20a167
His latest salvo underscores lingering rifts as Agyapong – who placed third in 2023 behind Bawumia and Alan Kyerematen – mounts a comeback bid.
Naa Torshie’s high-profile endorsement could bolster Agyapong’s appeal among disaffected moderates, but it risks alienating Bawumia loyalists still smarting from the election loss.
The NPP primaries, just weeks away, will test whether such internal shifts signal renewal or deepen divisions ahead of 2028.
