Nine Arrested After Mob Attacks Police in Saawie, Steals Four Guns

The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested nine suspects after a violent mob attack on officers in Saawie, a community in the Jirapa Municipality, during which four service weapons were stolen.

The assault took place on Friday, December 5, 2025, when around 30 youths confronted police who had arrived to conduct routine enquiries. The group beat the officers, seized their firearms, and left three personnel injured.

Regional Police Commander DCOP Francis Yiribaare personally led a reinforcement team to the scene, rescuing the injured officers and recovering all four stolen guns.

Police confirmed that efforts continue to locate two missing magazines.

Two of the injured officers received treatment and were discharged, while the third, who suffered a fractured arm, was transferred to Wa Regional Hospital for specialized care.

The nine arrested suspects will soon appear in court as investigations proceed. The Command strongly condemned the attack as unacceptable and a serious threat to public safety.

Authorities appealed to residents of Saawie and surrounding areas to cooperate with investigators by providing any information that could lead to additional suspects or the recovery of the remaining items.
