Nana Akomea Spent GH¢400 on Transport for Each Delegate in NPP Vice-Chairmanship Bid

Third Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has disclosed that his campaign spent GH¢400 on each delegate to cover transportation costs during his bid for the party’s vice-chairmanship.
He explained that the expenditure was necessary because some delegates had to travel considerable distances to voting centres, particularly in areas where transportation was difficult.
“I gave 400 cedis to them as transport. Each,” he said on Joy News.
Nana Akomea, however, indicated that the amount may not have matched what some delegates had received from other candidates, suggesting that the level of spending varied across the various campaigns.
“I didn’t think that the paraphernalia was essential. I didn’t think giving them T-shirts was going to do anything. I didn’t think giving them cups and having my banners all over was going to do anything,” he said.
He explained that he did not consider such materials essential to his campaign and instead sought to test whether delegates could be persuaded primarily by the strength of his message.
Nana Akomea acknowledged that some of his competitors adopted a more aggressive approach to campaign visibility, with large billboards and extensive branding seen at some voting centres.
He said his strategy was therefore deliberate, as he wanted to determine whether a campaign focused on the candidate’s message could succeed without heavy spending on promotional materials.
For Nana Akomea, the priority during the campaign was how well his message connected with delegates rather than how much his opponents were spending.
“When you’re on the campaign, you’re not too focused on what others are doing. You just focus on your message and how it is being received,” he said.
