Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin Shares Key Lesson on Parliamentary Leadership: “Don’t Take Speaker’s Actions Personally – See Them as Political Strategy”

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed important lessons that have shaped his approach to leadership, particularly the need to respond to political challenges with strategy rather than emotion.
Speaking during an interview on Good Morning Ghana on Monday, April 6, Afenyo-Markin recounted advice he received early in his leadership journey from a senior colleague.
“A senior colleague told me, do not complain about the Speaker. See every action as a political strategy and develop your own response,” he said.
He explained that this guidance has remained central to how he navigates difficult situations in Parliament, especially when dealing with decisions by Speaker Alban Bagbin.
Afenyo-Markin stressed that politicians must recognise that actions in the House are often aimed at advancing political objectives rather than personal attacks.
“If we understand that, then we will not be overly emotional,” he noted.
He emphasised that effective parliamentary leadership demands measured responses, strategic thinking, and discipline, particularly during moments of tension or disagreement.
The Minority Leader’s comments come amid ongoing debates about decorum, leadership styles, and the dynamics between the Majority and Minority sides in the current Parliament.
His remarks have been welcomed by some observers as a mature reflection on the realities of political leadership in Ghana’s legislature.
