Major Water Disruption Hits Eastern Accra and Tema After 42-Inch Pipeline Burst

Large parts of eastern Accra and the entire Tema Metropolis are experiencing severe water supply disruptions following a burst on a major 42-inch transmission pipeline, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced.
The incident occurred on Monday, January 19, 2026, severely affecting the delivery of treated water to several communities along the eastern corridor of the capital.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 20, GWL confirmed that its engineers responded immediately and are working continuously to repair the damaged pipeline. Due to the size of the pipe and the technical complexity involved, repairs are being carried out carefully to ensure long-term safety and durability.
GWL apologised for the inconvenience and assured customers that efforts are being intensified to restore normal supply as soon as possible.

- The entire Tema Metropolis
- Ashaiman
- Gbetsele
- Akatamanso
- Klagon
- Lashibi
- Baatsonaa
- Spintex
- Sections of East Legon
- Nungua
- Teshie
- Surrounding communities
The utility provider has urged essential service operators—such as hospitals and schools—to contact GWL directly for support while repairs are ongoing.
