The Administrator of the , popularly known as MahamaCares, , has clarified that the Fund does not provide financial support for patients seeking medical treatment outside .
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, May 11, 2026, she explained that the Fund has recently received numerous social media appeals from individuals requesting sponsorship for treatment abroad.
According to her, the law establishing the Fund limits its mandate strictly to supporting free treatment for non-communicable diseases within Ghana.
“There is something that we keep getting. Many people want funding to go abroad. Let me announce here and now, we do not support any funding out of the borders of this country,” she stated.
Obuobia further explained that the policy is intended to ensure cost efficiency and maximize the number of patients who can benefit from the Fund locally.
“That money that we spend for one patient to go to India for treatment, we can use that for about 20 patients in-country,” she added.
She stressed that any treatment support outside Ghana falls beyond the scope of the Fund as stipulated by law.
