Mahama Vows Irreversible Economic Reforms in Second Term

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to make his second term transformative, focusing on deep economic and governance reforms that future administrations cannot undo.

Speaking at the annual New Year School Conference on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Mahama said: “I have decided to make this second mandate so graciously granted to me by Ghanaians count. I have pledged to raise our economy and governance to a level that no succeeding government can reverse.”

Returning to power after eight years in opposition following his 2016 defeat, Mahama emphasized Ghana’s role as a democratic beacon amid regional backsliding.

“In a region where democracy is backsliding, we must demonstrate that democracy works and that our people can have faith in their leaders to uphold their interests and create opportunities for national prosperity,” he stated.

He assured sustained fiscal discipline: “We will not relax the current fiscal discipline and efficient management of the economy even in the election year of 2028.”

The remarks signal ambitious structural changes aimed at long-term stability and growth.
